 1. Algae production lead (posted 05/08/2022)

  • Location: Hosted by University of Exeter in the first 12 months, thereafter based at the company located at Rothamsted Research, Harpenden (London)

  • Full-time, Flexible 37,5h/wk

  • Start 1st of October 2022 or earlier if possible, applications considered on a rolling basis

  • 14-month position, with possibility of becoming permanent (subject to funding availability)

As Algae Production Lead, your main objective is to produce, scale up and optimise microalgae production. The produced biomass will allow BIO-F Solutions first prototypes to be tested in greenhouse and field trials.


As this role is essential to the success of BIO-F Solutions, it is a unique opportunity for a proactive individual looking to become a core member of a growing company. There is potential to quickly transition towards a senior role within the company, with potential benefits including increased remuneration (with funding being unlocked thanks to the team’s efforts), options for equity and greater responsibilities, including management.

In this role, you will:

  • Produce algae biomass for all greenhouse and field trials

  • Optimize algae biomass production protocols

  • Optimize downstream processing (harvesting and storage protocols)

  • Validate scale-up of bioreactor cultivation

  • Stay up to date with literature and contribute to R&D planning

  • Be innovative and conscientious

  • Contribute towards other tasks as needed

If you like challenges, and have a background that involves production of algae or working in the agriculture/food industry, you will be a great fit. 

Essential skills

  • Masters' degree in Microbiology or Biotechnology or similar

  • Practical experience in operating photobioreactors and growing microalgae

  • Practical experience in microbiology, incl. sterile techniques and analytics

  • Excellent communication skills (written, verbal)

  • Skills in planning, organising, prioritising and decision-making

  • Manual dexterity for handling relevant equipment

  • Ability to think outside the box

  • Lack of of hesitation for solving problems

  • Strong attentional to detail, consistently working to a high standard

Desirable skills

  • Experience working with large-scale bioreactors (100L or more)

  • Experience communicating with agriculture sector
